About Us

Our Goal

Our first commitment is to the multi-dimensional development of each child. At Bethany Children’s House, children build a strong foundation of knowledge while also developing personal interests and a genuine desire to learn. Through hands-on work and a balance of freedom within clear expectations, they grow in independence, focus, and responsibility. Careful attention to social, emotional, and physical development helps create a calm and respectful learning environment where each child can thrive. To support individualized attention we maintain a low teacher-to-student ratio of 6:1. We welcome children ages 2.5 to 6 years old.

Our Philosophy

Rooted in the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori, Bethany Children’s House is dedicated to educating the whole child through peaceful communication, a love of learning, and thoughtful exploration of the world.

Our Story

The vision for a Montessori school in the Honesdale area began with Christian Dayton and was thoughtfully carried forward in the summer of 1981 by a small group of dedicated parents. Gathering in a home in Bethany, they created a nurturing space grounded in the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori.

By the fall, the school had grown into a more established program at Bethany United Methodist Church with a certified teacher, laying a strong foundation for the years ahead. Over time, Bethany Children’s House continued to grow with its community, moving to Honesdale in 2014 and, in 2023, to its current home beside Honesdale’s Central Park.

Today we are proud to be an accredited Montessori school through the North American Montessori Center (NAMC), with all head teachers fully certified through NAMC. Bethany Children’s House is a registered 501(c)(3) Non-profit organization.

What Our Families are Saying

Our children thrive in the Montessori environment! Our curious little boys love exploring the classroom materials and come home every day excited to share what they learned about. We see them embracing Montessori principles like peaceful communication and care for their environment at home. Their teachers are loving and kind and we very much appreciate having a program where they can start at only 2 1/2 years old and continue until kindergarten. We love BCH!

The growth we’ve seen in our son since starting at BCH has been incredible. We’re so grateful for the nurturing environment and can’t wait to send our younger child next year!
