Established
in 1981, Children's House is a non-profit Montessori preschool located
in the Bethany United Methodist Church, just five minutes from
Honesdale.
Daily outdoor experiences are enjoyed in the park behind the historic
Bethany Public Library, where stone walls and century old trees
surround our playground.
Bethany Children’s House is the only Montessori school in this area and
offers your child a superior education. We offer Preprimary classes
with a maximum of fourteen students ages 3 to 5 years old with one
Teacher and an Aide. Our Toddler classes for ages 18 months to 3 years
old have a maximum of seven students with a Teacher and Aide. By
keeping our classes small, we can ensure that your child’s unique
learning capabilities will be observed and identified.
Bethany Children’s House is dedicated to the principles and
philosophies of Dr. Maria Montessori, who observed that children want
to learn, but need an environment that provides work that is meaningful
and in a setting that will allow each child to flourish. Dr. Montessori
taught us that a child is not simply an empty vessel to be “filled”
with knowledge. Rather, children posses an innate quest for knowledge
and our tasks as parents and teachers is to provide an atmosphere
conducive to learning- a “prepared environment”. Each child at Bethany
Children’s House is honored and respected for his or her own
uniqueness. We do a disservice to children when we are always “doing
for” them. Much of a child’s “work” is to learn how to do these things
for himself, and given the opportunity, in an appropriate setting, with
the right tools and materials, a child will do so with great pride. We
provide that setting, infused with the Montessori philosophy and gentle
but firm guidance.
The Pre-Primary classroom has different areas and they include Language
and Reading, Science and Nature, Geography and World Cultures, Math,
Music, Art, Sensorial and Practical Life. Each of these areas provide
hands-on learning opportunities to acquire basic skills for reading,
writing, math, and ways to explore their world and to master skills to
care for themselves and their environment. They learn to socialize with
friends and how to peacefully settle conflicts. Walking into our
Montessori classroom you will see children busily and happily writing
their names, learning to tell time, listening to a book or poem,
sounding out letters, singing a song, learning about the weather,
exploring color, light, sound, textures, washing a cup, sweeping the
floor, using numbers, forming a friendship, talking about their
feelings, exploring a continent, learning about the moon, the
rainforest, the ocean. The list is endless! And so is our enthusiasm!
Come and join us!
No preschool could better prepare your child for Kindergarten.
Children’s House can provide the foundation your child deserves for a
lifelong love of learning. Together, let’s open the world for our
children.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to talk about our program. I will be happy to speak with you.
